In the Waiting We Are Enlarged

The liturgical season of Advent marks the beginning of the Christian year. We light a candle each Sunday through the four weeks leading up to Christmas and read texts and sing songs that remind us to wait for God in Christ to come and fulfill all God’s promises to God’s people. “In our waiting,” writes former All Angels’ parishioner Bobby Gross, “we are enlarged.” Bobby continues:

“In Advent we focus on three ‘comings’ of Christ: his arrival in history as a baby born of Mary, his return in fearsome glory at the end of time and his intermediate entrance into our own lives. During Advent we are engaged by the prophets of Israel–Isaiah, Zephaniah, Micah, Malachi–and their messianic visions. We are confronted by John the Baptists’s stern call to prepare for Jesus by repenting. We are beckoned to walk with Mary and Joseph in their anxiety and expectation. We are sobered by the teachings of Jesus and his apostles on the judgment to come at the end of the age.”*

Beginning Sunday, November 29, All Angels’ will celebrate Advent and practice waiting together for the Lord, preparing the way for his coming afresh in our lives and in the world. We remember that the world is his, as are we, so we wait, we long, for his glorious reign to come “on earth as it is in heaven.” You are warmly invited to join All Angels’ as we wait together this Advent.

The Art of Advent Class

Experience the Advent season in a deeper way through The Art of Advent: a painting a day from Advent to Epiphany by Jane Williams. As a group, we will learn the stories behind several paintings (featured on our bulletin covers through Advent!) and how faith is expressed through these works. Join us Sundays, 11:45am-12:30pm, November 29 to December 20 via Zoom. Register here to access the Zoom call here, and order your own copy of the book here. Contact Yunjoeng Seol with questions.

Agape Meal

For the first three Wednesdays of Advent we will be hosting an Agape Meal at 7:00pm via Zoom. Agape, which is greek for “love”, signifies that this meal we will share together will be a time to focus on God’s love for us in sending Jesus at Christmas, and it will also serve as a chance to grow in love through cultivating expectation and practicing the discipline of waiting on God together. We will eat dinner, share what God is doing in our lives, and read and reflect upon Scripture. We will also hear from a guest each week who will share their testimony, and together we will pray in expectant hope of God’s coming again in glory. We hope you will join us for these Wednesday evening times of prayer and fellowship!

Advent Retreat 2020 via Zoom

How do we wait with hopeful expectation in this Advent season? Join us for a time of reflection and exploration through music, images, Scripture and prayer. We will have solo-time offerings for those seeking quieter space and small group offerings for those looking for more communal connections. And, through it all, we anticipate meeting and being met by God. Register here to receive the Zoom link. We look forward to seeing you then!
